This revitalised 200 seat restaurant in a rebuilt Mona Vale hotel in Sydney’s Northern Beaches captures a loft-style art warehouse ambiance, blending 70s coastal and retro aesthetics.
Channelling influences from Donald Judd to Scandinavian modernism the space combines robustness with curation, resonating with motel charm. In exposing and augmenting the existing steel and timber structures, a double-story volume was created under a retractable roof. Masonry forms, brick arches, and custom lighting further enrich the venue, emphasising the show kitchen's recycled brick arches and polished concrete floors with Carrara mosaic tiles.
Externally, stacked logs frame a double-sided fireplace that anchors the lounge areas. Filled with custom Oregon and hardwood furniture, reclaimed fittings and a tactile patina, the venue embraces a found quality, showcasing a commitment to sustainable, low-fi design.
"This hotel restaurant is a bit of an unsung hero I think. It’s one of my favourite restaurant rooms. We removed the upper level above the venue and kept the Oregon floor joists exposed, creating a sort of open trellis void."
