A quintessentially Australian cultural gem on the Gold Coast, Burleigh Pavilion is a revived 1980s coastal structure that seamlessly blends sun drenched nostalgia with enduring innovation.
The refurbishment addresses structural complexities while being conscious of operational efficiency and a low cost, sustainable base build. Built upon a coastal rock pool, reinforcement against harsh ocean weather conditions was required and led to a virtual reconstruction of the building including a new super steel structure and concrete framework.
Aware of its cultural responsibility to the beachfront headland, the strategic use of robust materiality combines with beautiful volumes and architectural shapes accented by faded pastels, corbeled blockwork, bold awnings, rattan ceilings and pink accents to evoke 70s Gold Coast beach nostalgia.
"A simple and robust palette of painted timber, concrete slabs and painted masonry is a good back drop to the salt spray."
