The Gully Penthouse is an alteration and addition to an existing 1970s apartment building. Drawing upon expansive coastal views, the interior modification and new furnished roof level exude beachside simplicity with a touch of the urban.

To provide new amenities for the family including a master suite and garden deck, the scheme included a new rooftop addition that would appear recessive and introduce limited new structural impacts to the 70’s vintage of the existing building.

The interior refurbishment was crafted around a simple yet elegant palette and creative story. The new services and rooms in the replanned and expanded floor plate exude a sense of coast, of hotel room, of loose fitting linen nostalgia – an unpretentious sanctuary complete with beach gully views of migrating humpback whales.

"With the construction of the parent’s retreat on the old concrete roof of the apartment building we were able to create a sanctuary that includes our bedroom, a fireplace living area, a sauna, bar area, walk in wardrobe as well as the rooftop garden. The entire space has all of the benefits of low maintenance apartment living, combined with the street level entry, spaciousness and facilities of a large house."
