Tilly May’s captures the essence of the strong female characters who shaped the colourful underworld of Sydney in the late 1800’s.

Referencing the architecture of that time, the small rooftop bar has been conceived as a ‘grand room’ within what could be interpreted as a historic home. The bar feels dimensional, layered and light-filled yet it retains an intimacy; smaller vignette spaces of private dining and lounge areas surround the central bar and the careful application of authentic materiality imbue a domestic familiarity.

Our creative direction evolved around the uncovering of the building’s structural heritage, peeling back the layers to reveal existing materials and architectural forms in the double height roof structure. This process of exposing the structure’s physical history intertwined with delving into the past of its infamous patrons – a combined exploration into authenticity of place.
