This alteration and addition to an existing North Shore three-bedroom interwar bungalow melds traditional and contemporary architecture, exploring scale tensions between the existing street-facing façade and the new rear extension.
Driven by sustainable design, wellness and innovation, the owners collaborated closely with the design team and challenged them to integrate environmental solutions, sustainable products and advanced technologies. From geothermal climate control to inert and low VOC materials, the house is architecturally courageous and demonstrates design of high quality, constructed to last.
The spacious addition features communal and private areas, a striking Le Corbusier-inspired chimney, and oversized glass doors framing the garden. Influenced by Louis Khan and Vokes & Peters the design embraces modernist references and a restrained palette while a selection of bespoke lighting and furniture elevate each space, contributing to the mid-century inspired contemporary Australian direction.
"The client challenged our practice to explore, source and create environmental solutions throughout the architectural process and pushed us to innovate the use of sustainable products, new technologies and ideas."
