695 sqm

Nestled in Sydney's northern beaches, Harbord Hotel reinvents itself as a coastal haven rooted in Australian surf culture.

Revamping the completely gutted, three-storey venue required a sensitivity to Freshwater’s rich working-class history and unpretentious community. Revealing elements of the building's past intermingle with a ‘effortlessly cool’ persona, where surf shack elegance is at the heart of its new identity.

A variety of bars and spaces across several floors including the Balsa restaurant exude living room style, slightly nostalgic yet with a lightness of memory to appeal to a broadened patronage. Curved bulkheads, seafoam greens, periwinkle pinks, gunmetal greys and brass all make a strong case for an old school era and cool simplicity. Timelessly restored furniture, original masonry detailing, and a grassroots feel embody Harbord Hotel's commitment to heritage, versatility, and community enrichment.

"Our vision was to pay homage to the venue’s rich history and showcase Freshwater’s unique beach culture. Alexander and Co helped us create this vision and their execution was flawless with the venue receiving nothing but praise from the hypersensitive locals. The finished product speaks for itself but the process was just as impressive."
